2020 Kia Telluride vs. 2019 Ford Explorer

In the time since the new Kia Telluride has arrived at showrooms like the one at Team Gunther Kia, it has put the rest of the large crossover SUV class on notice that there is a new competitor to deal with. Kia engineers and designers have built the Telluride to pull buyers from other automakers by offering lots of standard performance which translates into very strong capability scores. A comparison between the 2020 Kia Telluride vs. 2019 Ford Explorer will show potential Team Gunther Kia buyers just how strong the manufacturer’s latest crossover SUV truly is. The 2020 Telluride demonstrates clear leads in several important areas that are important to crossover SUV buyers including base powertrain performance, standard connectivity and safety technology as well as maximum cargo volume. While both the 2020 Kia Telluride and the 2019 Ford Explorer offer smartphone integration, only the Kia crossover SUV makes it available across the board. All versions of the 2020 Telluride available at the Team Gunther Kia showroom will offer access to the Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ suites of applications. People who choose the 2019 Explorer will need to choose the vehicle’s higher trims to get the same level of access. Additionally, the 2020 Telluride is equipped with a standard set of active safety features including forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring. This is another area where owners of the base trims of the 2019 Ford Explorer miss out with similar systems not being available unless they choose more expensive models. All versions of the 2020 Telluride offer more cargo volume than what is available in the 2019 Explorer.

Performance Specs

Kia is equipping all versions of the 2020 Telluride with the same powertrain features. Each 2020 Kia Telluride trim grade employs a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter, V-6 engine that is attached to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Telluride owners can expect to be able to use 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The 2019 Explorer can be equipped with three different powertrains, two of which don’t make as much horsepower as what is standard for the 2020 Telluride. Ford also offers a turbocharged V-6 that does make more power than the Kia engine. However, both the 2020 Telluride and the 2019 Explorer have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. The 2020 Kia Telluride can also record better fuel-economy scores than its Ford competitor.
