Should I use synthetic oil in my Kia car or SUV?

If there is one lesson that each and every technician working in the Team Gunther Kia Service Department wants to teach our customers, it’s that it’s never a good idea to delay or skip an oil change. The second most important thing an owner can do to keep their vehicle in the best condition is to make sure they follow the maintenance plans laid out in the owner’s manual – this includes using the right kind of oil. If you’re wondering, ‘Should I use synthetic oil in my Kia car or SUV,’ we asked a few long-time members of the Team Gunther Kia Service Department for their thoughts, which culminated in a resounding, maybe. What is synthetic motor oil?

The story of synthetic and conventional oil starts with crude oil getting pulled out of the ground. It continues with both types going through a refining process. After this is where they start to differ. Synthetic oil is actually further processed and broken down to the molecular level and put back together with chemicals to change its properties. For the most part, synthetic oil is able to better protect an engine across a wider range of temperatures, for a longer period of time or for more miles. Ultimately this means that a vehicle can go longer between recommended oil changes.

When should I switch from conventional to synthetic oil?

If a vehicle was designed to work with conventional or synthetic oil, it’s always going to be a good idea to stick with whatever the owner’s manual has to say. There are a few scenarios when it might make sense to switch from one to the other. However, this is going to be fairly rare in most cases and generally not advisable. In the event this is something that should happen with your vehicle, a Team Gunther Kia service advisor will walk you through the pros and cons.
